The graduate school is well embedded in the cluster of excellence MicroTec Southwest. Target of the industry driven cluster is to establish Baden-Württemberg ("Southwest Germany") as worldwide leading region for microtechnology and microsystem in the year 2020.

The future development of the companies engaged in micro- and nanostructuring techniques is strongly related to the ability to develop and to produce miniaturized systems based on ultra-precision micro structuring techniques. The fields of compentences covered in this graduate school are expected to produce important stimuli and contributions for these companies and thus will provide graduates excellent career opportunities.
